Drink it HOT

Winter is a wonderful time with a pleasant taste of a miracles around and when its cold and frosty outside, we usually searching the way to warm up ourselves with a cozy sweater or a gentle hug from the better half. So its just the right time to spoil yourself with something special. Apart from all the ginger cookies and honey cakes, we should not forget about the drinks, which can be so warm and fulfilling at this time of the year.

Three favourite cocktails for long winter evenings:

1. Grog “Better Hot”

Serves one:

  • 50ml of spicy rum
  • 30ml of fresh orange juice
  • 100ml of cherry juice
  • 2 anise stars
  • Some orange for decoration

The recipe is very simple. Mix all the ingredients in a pan, bring to the boil and simmer for a couple of minutes over low heat. Pour the drink into Irish glass and decorate with orange.

2. Mulled wine

Serves two:

  • 1 medium orange
  • 1 apple
  • 2 cm of fresh ginger
  • 1⁄2 lemon
  • 2 anise stars
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 500ml of red wine (to make it non-alcohol mix 50/50 grape and pomegranate juices)
  • 1tbsp of honey
  • 1⁄2 tsp of cloves

Dice apple and delete seeds. Ground ginger, some lemon and orange zest. Prepare the spices. Dice lemon and orange and mix with other ingredients in a pan. Add red wine and simmer over low heat until the small bubbles, but don’t bring it to the boil. Turn off the heat and leave the mulled wine for 10 mins. Pour into mugs and enjoy the taste.

3. Punch “White Christmas”

Serves four:

  • 750ml of white wine
  • 250ml of white rum
  • 500ml of water
  • 2 lemons
  • 3 oranges
  • 1 lime
  • 150 gr of sugar
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1⁄2 tsp of cloves
  • 3 anise stars

Thinly slice 1 lemon and 1 orange for decoration.
First zest 2 oranges, 1 lemon and 1 lime in one pan and squeeze the juice from the fruits to a different pan. Add spices, water and sugar to the pan with zest, bring it to the boil and simmer for 7 minutes.
Pour the syrup with spices to the second pan with juice, add wine and put it over low heat. When starts boiling, take from the heat and pour the rum into the pan. Leave for 5 mins.
Serve in a glass bowl with thinly sliced citrus. These are my special drinks that I love to share with my friends and family to make our time even more fun and joyful.
